Pet Sitting is Serious Business for This Nurse
By John L. Guerra
When people take the leap and start a business, they
usually choose a vocation that reflects their personalities and
the things they cherish in life. Suzi Schmidt of Chesapeake Beach
is no exception. The friendly and bright 60-year-old nurse has taken
her life-long love of animals and translated it into a thriving
business.
“Pet Sitting By Suzi” however, is not
your average pet-sitting business. To her, pet sitting is much more
than just feeding, watering, and playing with pets while their owners
are away on vacation. She administers medication when necessary.
She looks after the pets’ mental health with cuddling sessions,
walks, and exercise. She grooms the animals, cleaning the coats
of burrs, ticks and fleas. If she finds ticks, she preserves them
in the event that the family vet needs to verify the presence of
Lyme disease.
Schmidt’s first pet was a 200-pound female pig
named Armistice on her family’s farm north of Kansas City,
Mo., when she was a little girl. When Schmidt broke both her legs
in a car accident at age 11, doctors recommended therapy that included
riding a horse bareback, using only a bridle to aid the bones in
knitting properly. She rode everywhere on her horse for the next
year as her legs gradually regained strength.
“That was when I learned how important animals
can be in people’s lives,” she says.
Schmidt, who plans to retire soon from her career as a registered
nurse, cares for pets as if they’re human children.
“Animals can literally become members of your
family,” Schmidt says. “A pet can be your confidante
and secrets stay secrets. They’ll warm you on a cold night,
lower your blood pressure, and bolster your immune system.”
She sees herself as an inexpensive alternative to area kennels.
“Some of these families love their animals as much as they
do their own kids — they want them to be happy and healthy.
They’re unwilling to just drop them off at some kennel on
their way out of town. Kennels are often neither happy nor healthy
places to be.”
Pet sitting can be hard work. “The responsibility
can be overwhelming, like trying to get a suddenly ill pet to a
vet during rush hour.” But Schmidt does have her limits. She
doesn’t adore all animals. “I don’t do crocodiles,
bugs, or alligators,” she says. “You’d be surprised
what some people consider pets.”
